Privacy Policy
The short version. Nanuka has no accounts. Your baby's video and audio are encrypted end to end, travel directly between your own two devices, and are never stored on any server — including ours. Cry detection runs on your device. We cannot see or hear your feed, and there is nothing about it for us to sell, analyse or hand over.
This policy explains what Nanuka ("we", "us") does and does not do with information when you use the Nanuka app. It applies to the app and to this website.
You do not need an account
There is no sign-up, no password and no profile. To let two devices find each other, Nanuka uses anonymous authentication: each installation receives a random identifier that means nothing outside the app. We never ask for your name, email address or phone number, and we have no account record of you to lose or to be compelled to disclose.
Your video and audio never leave your devices
Live video and audio are end-to-end encrypted with DTLS-SRTP, the same class of technology used for FaceTime and other real-time calls, and are streamed directly between your two paired devices. This media is never stored on, recorded by, transcoded by or played back from any server.
Some home and mobile networks will not permit two devices to connect directly. In that case the encrypted stream is relayed through a server we operate, which forwards packets it has no key to read. A relay makes the connection possible; it does not make the contents visible, to us or to anyone else.
Nanuka has no cloud recording, no clip storage and no remote playback. There is no such feature to switch off, because there is none to begin with.
Cry detection happens on your device
Sound analysis runs entirely on the device beside your baby, using Apple's on-device frameworks. The audio being analysed is never uploaded anywhere. When a cry is recognised, only a small event signal — in effect the words "cry detected" — travels to your other device so it can alert you.
What we do process
To connect two devices and to run a subscription, a limited amount of non-content information is handled:
- Pairing and connection metadata. An opaque room identifier, opaque device identifiers, join requests, timestamps and the technical messages two devices exchange in order to negotiate a connection. This contains no media and no personal detail.
- Device presence. Whether a paired device is currently online, so the other one can show you honestly whether the monitor is live.
- Subscription status. Whether this device is entitled to Nanuka Pro, together with the anonymous customer identifiers our subscription provider uses. Payment itself is handled by Apple; we never see your card details.
Names you type stay with you
Names you give a room or a device — "Mia's crib", for example — are stored on your device and, if you use iCloud, in your own private iCloud database. They are never sent to our servers, which see only opaque identifiers.
Anonymous usage analytics
To understand which parts of the app are used and where people get stuck, Nanuka can send anonymous product events — for example "a session started", "pairing succeeded" or "an alert was delivered". These carry a random per-device identifier and our subscription provider's anonymous identifiers. They never include your name, an account, a device name, a room identifier, or anything derived from video or audio.
Our analytics provider hosts this data in the European Union. There is no switch for it inside the app: the events are anonymous by construction and carry nothing that identifies you.
Diagnostics from Apple
If you have opted in to sharing analytics with developers in your iOS settings, Apple may pass us anonymous crash and performance reports. This is Apple's mechanism, it is off unless you turned it on, and you can turn it off again in iOS Settings at any time.
What we never do
- We do not analyse the contents of your feed. We cannot.
- We do not use advertising trackers or advertising identifiers.
- We do not sell your data, or share it for anyone else's marketing.
- We do not build a profile of you or your household.
Children
Nanuka is a tool operated by adults to watch over their own children. Children are not users of the app, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Our practices are designed to be consistent with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Keeping and deleting your information
Because there is no account, your data lives with your devices. Removing a pairing — by deleting the station on the device you watch from, or by choosing Reset pairing on the device beside your baby — removes the associated pairing data. Doing it on each paired device removes it everywhere. Deleting the app removes what remains on that device. Connection metadata for a room that no longer exists is discarded.
Who else is involved
Nanuka relies on a small number of providers. None of them receives your video or audio.
| Provider | What they do for us |
|---|---|
| Apple | App Store distribution, subscription billing, and your own iCloud backup |
| Google Firebase | Anonymous authentication, pairing and signalling metadata, device presence |
| Hetzner | Hosts our relay server, which forwards encrypted packets it cannot read |
| RevenueCat | Subscription status and receipt validation |
| Aptabase | Anonymous, EU-hosted product analytics you can switch off in the app |

This site is a set of static pages. It sets no cookies, runs no advertising or tracking scripts, and does not profile visitors. The contact form on the support page composes a message in your own mail app; nothing you type into it is sent to a server.

If we make a material change we will update the effective date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, tell you in the app.
