Getting started

What is Nanuka?

Nanuka turns two Apple devices you already own into a baby monitor. One device — the Baby Station — sits near the crib and streams live video and audio. The other — the Monitoring Station — is the one you keep with you. There is no extra hardware to buy, no account to create, and the video never passes through a server.

Do I need two devices, or can I use just one?

You need two. One stays with your baby and one stays with you, which is what makes it a monitor rather than a camera. An older iPhone or iPad that is no longer your daily phone makes an ideal Baby Station, as long as it can be kept plugged in.

Which devices and iOS versions does Nanuka support?

iPhone and iPad running iOS 16 or later. There is no Android, Windows or web version, and none is planned. Nanuka is built on Apple frameworks for on-device sound analysis and encrypted peer-to-peer streaming, which is what lets it avoid a cloud service entirely.

How do I pair the two devices?

Open Nanuka on both. The Baby Station shows a QR code; point the Monitoring Station at it, or tap to enter the six-character code shown underneath instead. The Baby Station approves the request and the two are paired. There is no email address, password or profile at any point, and pairing usually takes under a minute.

Does it work away from home, and is there a range limit?

There is no distance limit. The two devices find each other over Wi-Fi or cellular data, so you can watch from the next room, the garden, or another city. Both devices do need some internet connection to reach each other. Nanuka is not a walkie-talkie: it cannot connect two devices with no network at all.

What happens if my Wi-Fi drops?

Nanuka notices the moment the stream stops flowing rather than waiting for the connection to time out, shows you plainly that the feed is no longer live, and reconnects on its own when the network returns. Losing a connection never leaves a frozen picture on screen pretending to be live.

Privacy & security

Do I need to create an account?

No. Nanuka has no accounts, no sign-up and no password. Devices are paired directly to each other with a QR code or a short code. There is no profile of you for us to hold, lose, or be asked to hand over, and nothing to delete when you stop using the app.

Does my baby’s video or audio ever leave my devices?

No. The live stream travels directly between your two paired devices. It is never stored, recorded, transcoded or played back on any server, including ours. When your home network will not allow a direct connection, the encrypted stream is bounced through a relay we run, which forwards packets it has no key to read. There is no cloud recording feature to turn off, because there is no cloud recording. The full detail is in our Privacy Policy.

How is the stream encrypted?

With DTLS-SRTP, the same standard that secures FaceTime and other real-time calls. The two devices agree on keys directly with each other, so the encryption is end-to-end: our relay, our signalling database and your internet provider all see only ciphertext. You can compare a short verification phrase on both devices to confirm you are connected to the device you think you are.

What information does Nanuka collect?

Only what is needed to connect two devices and to run a subscription: an anonymous device identifier, the room they share, and timestamps. Plus anonymous usage events such as "a session started" — anonymous by construction, with nothing that identifies you. No video, no audio, no name, no email address, and nothing derived from what the camera or microphone picked up. Our Privacy Policy lists every processor by name.

How do I remove a paired device or delete my data?

Because there is no account, your data lives on your devices. On the Monitoring Station, delete the station card to drop the pairing. On the Baby Station, open Settings and choose Reset pairing. Deleting the app removes what is left on that device.

Alerts & monitoring

How does cry detection work?

The Baby Station listens with Apple’s on-device sound analysis and recognises the sound of a baby crying. The listening happens entirely on that device — no audio is uploaded for anything to analyse it. When a cry is recognised, a small "cry detected" signal travels to your Monitoring Station and it alerts you.

Will a cry alert reach me if my phone is on silent?

Cry alerts are sent as Time Sensitive notifications, so they are delivered promptly and can be allowed to break through a Focus mode you have set up. They do not override the ring or silent switch. Keep Nanuka open on the Monitoring Station while you are monitoring, and allow notifications for it when the app asks.

Can I use other apps while watching?

Yes, with Picture in Picture. Swipe up to the Home Screen or open another app while the feed is live and it shrinks into a floating window that keeps playing. Drag it anywhere on screen, or to an edge to tuck it out of the way, and tap it to go back to full screen.

Does the Baby Station need to stay awake?

Yes. Keep Nanuka open and on screen on the Baby Station while you are monitoring — it stops the screen locking on its own, so it will keep streaming unattended. Keep it plugged in: streaming video and listening for a cry is steady work for a battery.

Plans & billing

What does Nanuka cost, and what is free?

Pairing and audio monitoring are free for as long as you want them. Live video and cry alerts are the part Nanuka Pro pays for. Your first monitoring session opens 24 hours of full video and cry alerts with nothing to buy and nothing to cancel; after that the feed continues as live audio unless you subscribe. Prices are shown in the App Store before you buy, and vary by country.

Do I need to pay on both devices?

No. Only the Monitoring Station — the device you watch from — needs Nanuka Pro. Baby Stations are always free, so adding a second camera in another room costs nothing. Pro covers every device signed in to your Apple ID, and members of your Apple Family; tap Restore on those devices.

How do I cancel, or get a refund?

Subscriptions are handled by Apple, not by us. Open the App Store, tap your profile picture, tap Subscriptions, choose Nanuka and cancel. You keep Pro until the end of the period you have already paid for. Refunds are requested from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
